When the U.S. Department of Justice accused online poster retailer David Tompkins of price-fixing, you may have wondered why the DoJ pursued a small-time retailer for its first-such antitrust case against. As it turns out, an algorithm may have been the cause. Algorithm-driven (or bot-driven) selling poses a new and formidable challenge to existing antitrust laws and bot-driven price-fixing could face new scrutiny soon.
